Where are the trading desks of the Federal Reserve System and the European Central Bank moving markets? Back in mid-December, the Federal Open Market Committee directed its trading desk at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to undertake open market operations to maintain the federal funds rate between the target range of 4.25% and 4.50%. Open market operations involve buying and selling securities, usually government debt, in order to maintain the target range for setting the overnight interest rate at which banks exchange excess reserves. Another tool for establishing the target range for the federal funds rate is the…
May 4, 2020 – 04:57 am Alberta Liberals would put resources into illness prevention David Swann, leader of the Alberta Liberal Party, says a Liberal government would put resources into illness prevention. The announcement came on Tuesday when the Alberta Liberal party released its healthcare platform. According to Swann, illness prevention would reduce hospital bed use as well as surgeries and a variety of future health complications. Swann says the healthcare system in Alberta has been struggling to find its identity after being decentralized, centralized and then decentralized again since 2008. The Liberals say if elected they would reduce administrative…

President Carter passed away Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia. From peanut farmer, Naval officer to becoming the 39th US President, he leaves behind a legacy of faith, patriotism, and humanity that surpasses any former president. He started Habitat For Humanity decades ago, a program that built homes for the poor and homeless. He was a self-sacrificing man who prioritized giving time, financial help, and love to others over hedonistic and opportunistic pursuits. Throughout his public service, President Carter fought for the equal rights of all people. He was a man of authentic, deep faith, not the fake faith…
69 Teresa Giudice is firing back at Dolores Catania. The Real Housewives of New Jersey has been no stranger to drama, both on and off-camera. But with Season 15 on the horizon, tensions have reached a new peak, especially when Dolores Catania recently expressed her frustration over the cast’s inability to “get it together” for the upcoming season. Dolores, known for her level-headedness, vented that she had done everything possible to mend relationships but to no avail. In response, Teresa Giudice shared her candid thoughts, and her comments have certainly stirred up conversation. On the AllAboutTRH podcast, we asked Teresa Giudice about Dolores’ Catania’s…
Nearly 10% of adults will experience a mood disorder each year. It may be caused by several factors such as major life events, chronic or severe illness or injury, medications, or mental diseases. Sometimes, there might not even be an obvious cause. The good news is not everyone who experiences mood changes will develop a disorder. Oftentimes, it will resolve on its own, improve over the course of the day, or within a couple of hours. There are also activities that you can do to combat fluctuating emotions and enhance your mood. Go Outdoors Spending time in nature is one of the ways…
With just three weeks remaining in the season, for some NFL teams their seasons have essentially been declared over with no chance at a playoff game. For those teams that have been eliminated from post season play they are simply playing for pride, positional spots for 2025, and the exit sign that says, “season over.” On the other hand, some teams have already clinched their respective divisions, some divisional titles are still up for grabs, and other teams have inched closer to a wild card spot. There are other teams still alive and said to be on the “bubble” for…
Two weeks ago the exiled Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef took part in a live online debate with Piers Morgan, the conservative British TV presenter, that ignited something of a firestorm on the internet. Despite the technical limitations of the remotely held discussion, the highly articulate Youssef pretty much eviscerated the talking-points of those defending Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip (and the West Bank), clearly catching Morgan on the backfoot. The latter was much better prepared in a second face-to-meet interview with the former surgeon-turned-comedian, though this time resorting to ever more desperate logic to argue the position of Israel…
Europe is closed for the day and the EUR/USD is, as of 11:01 am, priced at 1.0382. I am still confident that it will trade above 1.0288 by the end of this week. As usual, I am interested in trader sentiment within the gardened walls of the interbank market. Unless you are sitting on the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s trading desk or the desks of the primary dealers contracted to act as a counterparty to the Federal Reserve, then we regla-degla retail traders are stuck with reading market sentiment and price movement from the secondhand information we receive…
Editor’s note: This week, to mark the 170th anniversary of the appearance of the first issue of The Economist on September 2nd 1843, this blog will answer some of the more frequently asked questions about The Economist itself. SOME readers, particularly those used to the left-right split in most democratic legislatures, are bamboozled by The Economist’s political stance. We like free enterprise and tend to favour deregulation and privatisation. But we also like gay marriage, want to legalise drugs and disapprove of monarchy. So is the newspaper right-wing or left-wing? Neither, is the answer. The Economist was founded in 1843…
